10 Times Mariah Carey Proved She Was A True Icon

Since the 1990s, Mariah Carey has been wowing the public with her larger-than-life voice, impressive vocal range and signature stage presence. Next week, the pop diva will be honored with the prestigious Icon Award at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards on May 1 and the Celeb Secrets team is beyond excited for it!

Along with her award, the legendary singer will take the stage to perform some of her biggest hits. The “We Belong Together” hitmaker joins previous legendary Icon recipients Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Cher, Neil Diamond, Celine Dion, and Jennifer Lopezgiving her a superstar status that only a handful of artists can say they have.

Over the years, Mariah Carey has led the Billboard Hot 100 in each year of the 1990s, making her the only artist to top the chart in every year of any decade. She has also had 18 total No. 1s on the chart, the most among any soloist. In addition, 6 of her albums claimed the No. 1 spot of the Billboard 200 albums chart.

There’s no doubt, Mariah Carey is a queen herself, and in honor of this special moment, here are 10 times she’s proven to be a true icon.

Hosted by Kelly Clarkson, the 2019 Billboard Music Awards will air LIVE from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Wednesday, May 1st @ 8PM ET/PT on NBC. The show will feature performances from Madonna feat. MalumaJonas BrothersBTS featuring HalseyKelly Clarkson, Lauren Daigle, Khalid, Panic! At The Disco, and Sam Smith & Normani.

In 2012, she was placed at the second spot on the VH1’s list of 100 Greatest Women in Music.

In 1996, “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men from Carey’s Daydream CD set the record for most weeks at number one, 16 weeks. Billboard magazine also named it the most popular song of the 1990s.

In 1991, Mariah Carey received her first Grammy. Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Vision of Love” at the 33rd annual Grammy Awards.
