Disney+ has excited Wildcats fans around the globe, as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is coming back for a season 3!
The third act will follow the Wildcats as they leave the hallways of East High for an eventful summer of romances, drama, restlessness and campfires while away at sleepaway camp. Beginning later this year, filming and production for the new season will be moving from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles.
Series creator, Tim Federle voiced his excitement, “We are overjoyed to be heading to the great outdoors for season three, and grateful to our partners and friends at Disney+ for their continued support of our next-generation Wildcats,” he said in a press statement.
The series is based off the successful High School Musical films, which were released back in the late 2000s. Season one of HSMTMTS premiered in January 2020 with the launch of the Disney+ streaming service. Since its release, the show has gained worldwide recognition, earning a GLAAD Award in 2020 for outstanding kids and family programming. The hit single from season 1, “All I Want”, performed and written by the show’s biggest pop star, Olivia Rodrigo, became platinum-certified, reaching Billboard’s Hot 100 and over 1 billion streams to date. Many of its leading actors, such as Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie, Matt Cornett, and Dara Renee have kickstarted their careers since the show’s run.
Season 3 will take place after the Wildcats’ production of Beauty and the Beast, following Nini, Ricky and the rest of the theatre students packing their bags for camp as school is finally out for the summer! Additional details of the next season have yet to be announced, although answers on the cliffhanger finale will eventually be revealed.
