American Idol: Top 4 Performance Night Recap – March 24, 2016

There’s only two weeks left until American Idol is gone forever! 😥

On tonight’s episode of American Idol, the Top 5 performed two songs for America’s votes — a rock song and a song originally performed by this week’s mentor, Sia.

Surprisingly, the one who stood out to me the most tonight was Trent Harmon. Harmon covered “Sharp Dressed Man” by ZZ Top and I was completely blown away.  His cover was unique and his vocal capabilities just outshined the other contestants. After the 90 second performance, JLo said, “I’ve been waiting for you to have this performance.”  Keith Urban stated that Harmon he needed to show his strongest attributes at this point in the competition. Check out the amazingness Trent Harmon left on stage below.

The Top 4 rounded out to be (as I predicted) Trent Harmon, La’Porsha Renae, MacKenzie Bourg, and Dalton Rapattoni, meaning Sonika Vaid received the lowest votes last week and will not move on in the competition. While we were sad to see Sonkia’s time on the show end, we knew getting saved every week was not going to last forever.

After Sonika was eliminated, viewers were treated to two performances from Idol alums David Cook and Katharine McPhee. Cook performed his new single “Heartbeat” while McPhee reprised her awe-inspiring version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Watch both performances below.

Following the return of two successful Idols, it was time to see the Top 4 perform songs from their mentor, Sia.

The Top 4 — La’Porsha Renae, Trent Harmon, MacKenzie Bourg and Dalton Rapattoni — performed “Elastic Heart,” “Chandelier,” “Titanium,” and “Bird Set Free,” respectively.

Stealing the show for me on the Sia half was Dalton Rapattoni with “Bird Set Free.” We’ve recently learned about Rapattoni’s struggle with bi-polar disorder, and tonight he used his disorder to completely demolish this song and the stigma against his illness. Sia herself struggles with the same disorder, so it was great to see someone with the same disorder tackle the track. JLo commented on Dalton’s bravery and told him that singing helps him find himself. Harry Connick Jr. said, “It was the most powerful for me when you sang the line about there’s a scream inside that we all try to hide.”

After the Top 4 performed, it was time for mentor Sia to take the stage. The Australian singer sang her new track “Cheap Thrills” and as always, she killed it.
