American Idol XIV honored season one winner Kelly Clarkson for its fourth week of live shows at CBS Studios on Wednesday evening (April 1) in Los Angeles.
The show kicked off with a special performance of “Heartbeat Song” by the one and only Kelly Clarkson. If you thought Kelly being on the show was a blast from the past, think again. Season two winner Ruben Studdard also made a special appearance in the audience this evening! Boy, do we feel old.
Nick Fradiani was the first contestant to move on in the competition, performing “Catch My Breath.” Jax, Tyanna Jones, Joey Cook, Quentin Alexander, Qaasim Middleton and Clark Beckham followed Nick and performed “Beautiful Disaster,” “Mr. Know It All,” “Miss Independent,” “Dark Side,” “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” and “The Trouble With Love Is,” respectively.
Kelly Clarkson returned to the stage for a second time to perform Etta James’ “At Last,” the same song she auditioned with thirteen years ago, which led her to be the first winner of the talent competition series.
Idol put a twist on things this week with the “Idol Fan Save.” Similar to the “Instant Save” on The Voice, the bottom two contestants perform for America, and viewers at home vote via Twitter with a special hashtag for who they want to put through to the next week of live shows. The bottom two this week were Rayvon Owen and Daniel Seavey. Battling laryngitis, Daniel put on a mediocre performance of Kelly’s smash hit “Breakway.” Following Daniel, Rayvon changed Clarkson’s dance anthem “Since U Been Gone” into a ballad, and absolutely nailed it. After the Idol Fan Save via Twitter, America decided to save Rayvon Owen and allow him to compete during next week’s live shows.
