Britney Spears Speaks Out Against Conservatorship

Britney Spears is speaking out against her conservatorship for the first time in years.

On Wednesday (June 23), Spears appeared virtually to a Los Angeles court and Judge Brenda Penny to request the termination of her 13-year long conservatorship.

In 2008, a court ordered the singer a conservatorship after her public breakdown in 2007. With this agreement, the singer’s estate and aspects of her life are fully controlled by her father, Jamie Spears. Since 2019, the singer has engaged in legal battles against her father and management in order to be freed of the arrangement.

During Spears’ 24 minute long statement, which can be read in its entirety on Varietyshe voices jarring details of the trauma she has been experiencing. Among those details include how she has been lying to the public about the declining state of her mental health. She said, “I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

The pop star also talks about the many restrictions she has been placed on. She is currently prohibited from having more kids because of an IUD in her body that she is not allowed to remove. She said, “I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have a (IUD) inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant.” She continues, “This so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children.”

Spears pleads for her conservatorship to end without being evaluated. She wants to sue her family for the damage they have caused her. Above all, she simply wants a normal life. She said, “All I want is to own my money, for this to end, and my boyfriend to drive me in his f***ing car.”

In the singer’s closing statement, she says she deserves to have a break to do whatever she wants. She even wishes that she could talk to the judge forever because she fears the aftermath of her statement. She concludes, “And I’m tired of feeling alone. I deserve to have the same rights as anybody does, by having a child, a family, any of those things, and more so. And that’s all I wanted to say to you. And thank you so much for letting me speak to you today.”
