CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW SERIES SPIRIT RIDING FREE AND YOUR CHARACTER?
Darcy Rose Byrnes: “Spirit Riding Free is a story about the Mayor of Miradero’s daughter: Maricela (voiced by moi). When city girl Lucky moves into town, Maricella quickly takes her under her wing. Through the show, Maricela will teach the other children of the town how to behave through her winning charm and unbreakable Spirit (that’s where the show gets it’s name). There may be some horses, can’t really remember… But that’s basically what the show’s about. Okay seriously the show is about a girl named Lucky and a wild mustang she names Spirit who form an unbreakable bond with other girls and horses in the town of Miradero. There’s tons of adventure and horses and these girls are really incredible to watch on screen.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR AUDITION PROCESS AND HOW YOU BECAME INVOLVED WITH THE PROJECT? WHAT DREW YOU TO THE ROLE?
Darcy Rose Byrnes: “In this business, you do so many auditions that they all tend to blend together. This one however, stuck out. Maricela is fun and not always the nicest, but she’s textured and real. I always feel very lucky when a role like this crosses my path. I remember being excited and hoping that I’d get the chance to play her. I knew the character was a special one, but I didn’t know how special the project itself was until the first table read. Seeing the preliminary art and reading the script for the first time (with the other actors, to boot!), I had this feeling in my heart… It was like we had a diamond sitting in our collective hands and no one knew yet. I am so beyond proud to be a part of this show.”
THE SERIES IS BASED OFF THE OSCAR NOMINATED FILM SPIRIT: STALLION OF THE CIMARRON— WERE YOU A FAN OF THE FILM OR WATCHED IT PRIOR TO RECORDING YOUR VOICEOVER?
Darcy Rose Byrnes:Â “I am told I watched it when It first came out but I was too young to remember it. I watched it again recently and was so thrilled. It is an incredible movie! Plus, Matt Damon. Enough said.”
THE GIRLS ARE A LITTLE YOUNGER THAN YOU— DID YOU FEEL THAT YOU COULD HAVE RELATED TO THEM WHEN YOU WERE THEIR AGE?
Darcy Rose Byrnes: “Absolutely! This show has this perfect magical blend… It’s not a “girls’ show†or a “boys’ show†it’s an Adventure show. It goes beyond the confines of demographic and genre. It touches on friendship, loyalty, trust, right and wrong, adventure, freedom… It is the show I wish I had growing up and the kids in this show are the kids I wish I had as friends growing up, and kids that I hope I was and still aspire to be. They are role models and teaching tools.”Â
