David Archuleta On How New Album ‘Therapy Sessions’ Helped Him Get Through His Real-Life Mental Health Struggles (Exclusive)

David Archuleta is being the most honest he’s ever been with his fans on his latest album Therapy Sessions.

The 10-track record, which dropped on May 20, gives listeners a look inside David’s internal struggle with himself – a battle he has experienced for most of his life.

“Its music based off actual therapy that I was going through. [The album] felt like I was completing my therapy because writing music is very therapeutic; you get out a lot of emotions that you hold in and put it to music,” David tells Celeb Secrets on a Zoom call.

“I talk about my own worry, anxiety and negative feelings toward myself. I’ve had a real challenge thinking positively about myself and I’ve had that struggle ever since I was little. Sometimes I just get so unmotivated by the negative thoughts that come to me, and I think for awhile I was just like, ‘I need to change my way of thinking.’ I’m still learning how to deal with these weird freak outs and fears that I’ll have, but its been really helpful and I’ve wrote about it. And its a lot of what I’ve learned and my worries I’ve kind of put on paper and to melody on this album.”

“All of the songs talk about this battle in my head against guardedness and fear and being anxious and paranoid versus looking at the good and having the courage to go through these fears,” he adds, “Don’t let them control your life and don’t believe everything when it says how horrible of a person you are.”

Therapy Sessions debuted at #1 on the Amazon and iTunes Pop Charts and #2 across all genres. It’s also the first body of work Archuleta has released since his last LP Postcards in the Sky in 2017 because, according to the singer, it “took that long to process everything.”

“My album was actually supposed to come out in April but it got pushed back,” David tells Celeb Secrets on releasing during Mental Health Awareness Month. “I feel like it’s definitely more appropriate to come out in May just because it is about therapy and my own mental health journey.”

Representing transparency that has not been present in previous releases, Archuleta hopes that Therapy Sessions can convey the message that his listeners aren’t alone and should get help if they really need it.

“I want them to know that they’re not alone if they feel any of these feelings,” he says. “I just want to be open to people about getting the help to work through anything that is holding me back still.”

In 2008, more than 30 million television viewers fell in love with his angelic voice and their 44 million votes made him runner-up and fan favorite in Season 7 of American Idol. Soon after, David’s single “Crush” debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the track sold 166,000 downloads in its first week in the U.S. and subsequently more than 1.92 million digital copies to reach double platinum. Three months later, David’s self-titled album went gold, selling more than 750,000 copies in the U.S., and more than 900,000 copies worldwide.
