Doritos’ 3D Crunch Super Bowl Commercial Stars a ‘Flat’ Matthew McConaughey (Watch)

Life is hard when you’re 2D. Just ask Matthew McConaughey.

The Oscar-winning actor is the star of Doritos’ new 60-second Super Bowl LV commercial, for their old-school treat, Doritos 3D Crunch.

“Flat Matthew,” how McConaughey is known as in the commercial, is seen struggling through day to day tasks, with Queen’s “I Want to Break Free” playing in the background of course. Viewers see him get ignored at a coffee shop, blown away by the wind as he’s walking his dog, and even sucked up by his Roomba because of his two-dimensional form.

The commercial also features actress Mindy Kaling and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who we see together with “Flat Matthew” on Kimmel’s late-night show. Kimmel makes “Flat Matthew” the punchline of his joke.

“Did you drive here? Or did you travel by fax?” Kimmel asks McConaughey.

We later see “Flat Matthew” walking down the street where he comes across a Doritos 3D Crunch vending machine and he slithers into the machine to get himself a bag. As he eats one of the Doritos, he puffs back up and returns to normal, getting himself stuck in there.

Doritos has been teasing the spot with the hashtag #FlatMatthew and had fans buzzing about the commercial, wondering who “Flat Matthew” could be since last month. But the mystery is finally over and fans can now get in with all the fun.

Along with the commercial, Doritos has also encouraged fans to turn themselves two dimensional by using a new Branded Effect available on TikTok which will be accompanied by Queen’s “I Want to Break Free.” There are also two interactive lenses on Snapchat – a face lens that helps turn fans flat like “Flat Matthew” and a second AR experience that puts a Doritos 3D Crunch vending machine in the fans’ home, even letting them purchase a bag of the treat.

Doritos has always been a fan favorite when it comes to the Super Bowl commercials and it loves creating funny and entertaining content for fans, this year is no different.

“We pride ourselves on Doritos Super Bowl commercials bringing smiles to fans’ faces each and every year and are confident this year’s #FlatMatthew campaign will deliver once again,” said Rachel Ferdinando, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Frito-Lay North America.

Don’t forget to watch the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday (Feb. 7) at Super Bowl LV. You won’t want to miss the game, but also the commercials and the halftime show performed by The Weeknd!
