Birthday surprises are hard to plan and keep a secret as it is, let alone during wacky times like these. The crew over at The Drew Barrymore Show were able to put together the ultimate surprise for Drew Barrymore’s birthday on Feb. 22—along with the help of some of Barrymore’s closest celebrity friends and loved ones.
The list of special guests included the likes of David Letterman, Cameron Diaz, Steven Spielberg, Jimmy Fallon, and more. Barrymore had absolutely no clue about who was going to appear on the show or what was going to happen during it.
“Hi, it’s my birthday. I’m so excited,“ Barrymore said during the teaser for the show. “I love birthdays, and we all thought it would be a really fun idea if I didn’t know anything that was going to happen today. How cool is that?”
Little did she know that she’d be kicking off the show in immediately shocked tears as Letterman (whom Barrymore thought was calling in with Zoom) walked out onto the set of the show.
Barrymore stayed shocked in her seat before remaining shocked when she stood up as Letterman took a seat, “I’m so grateful that you came here,” a teary-eyed Barrymore said to Letterman, whom she’s known and been friends with for quite some time.
After Letterman’s appearance, they played a video message from Fallon to Barrymore, where the late-night talk show host described his first time meeting the birthday girl. He said it was like meeting his best friend because she “makes you feel like the most important person in the room.”
Another longtime friend of Barrymore’s, Diaz, or as they’ve nicknamed each other “Poo Poo,” called in to the show via Zoom. The pair shared everything regarding their friendship and even how Diaz is the only friend that can spoon Barrymore in bed.
As they’re wrapping up the call with Diaz, Barrymore is brought to tears once again (hey, it’s her birthday, she’ll cry if she wants to) by the kind words that her “Poo Poo” says to her.
“Truly, one of the great joys of my life is our friendship,” Diaz warmly shares. “When I think about you, literally, I will cry, because I just think you’re so special.”
More tears were welcomed after Barrymore watched an animation done by her daughters and receiving a Zoom call from Spielberg.
What a great birthday surprise for the actress, it’s going to be a tough one to beat for next year!
