WHAT’S DIFFERENT:Â In a first-of-its-kind move, MTV is blending nominees across movies and television where actors from all screens can vie for the Golden Popcorn in the same categories. Additionally, the show will break down the gender wall with exclusively non-gendered categories.Â
The five new and culturally relevant categories are:
Best American Story: Awarded to the show or film that shows America at its best, open and diverse.
Best Fight Against the System (formerly Best Fight): Awarded to the film or show whose characters best exemplify fighting against a system that tries to keep them down.
Tearjerker: Awarded to the best scene in a film or TV series that makes you break out the tissues.
Best Host: Awarded to the best host across all daytime, primetime and late-night talk shows.
Best Reality Competition: Awarded to the competition series with the biggest fan followings.
Naturally diverse and unconventional match-ups:
Allison Williams (“Get Outâ€) vs. Demogorgon (“Stranger Thingsâ€) for Best Villain
Donald Glover (“Atlantaâ€) vs. Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virginâ€) for Best Actor in a TV Show
Ashton Sanders & Jharrel Jerome (“Moonlightâ€) vs. Taraji P. Henson & Terrance Howard (“Empireâ€) for Best Kiss Â
While accepting trophies on stage, MTV Movie & TV Awards winners have the opportunity to thank their moms, their directors, Beyoncé, and their fans (of course!). But what if those stars could talk to fans directly? Simple Mobile is bringing fans The Fan Cam Live on MTV’s Facebook page to give participating talent the chance to respond directly to fan shout outs and comments as they step backstage. With the guidance of host, Jeffery Self, celebs will appear live on Facebook moments after they won (or performed or presented!) an award on air. They will interact with a moderated cue of fan comments and questions, which will appear on a large screen or monitor – a simple, but powerful way to speak directly to the audience in real time backstage for the duration of the live show.
