According to the Dictionary, a “Hot Mess” is a term used to describe a particularly disorganized person or chaotic situation. In some uses, a person described as a hot mess is attractive but is just barely keeping it together.
20-year-old whimsical pop singer Gabi Sklar uses the term as the title of her debut EP, available now on all streaming platforms, as it not only resonates with her, but anyone in their 20s that’s discovering who they really are.
“In the time I was writing the EP, I had so many emotions bottled up. I didn’t realize it at the time, but each song represents a different layer of who I am and what I was going through,” Gabi tells Celeb Secrets. “To me, that’s what ‘a hot mess’ is: struggling to get through those moments but eventually, those hardships shape your character and contribute to your growth and independence.”
Q&A: Get to Know Gabi Sklar
The Miami-based, New York-raised artist’s music is lyric-centric and primarily piano based. Growing up in a musical family, Gabi began learning to play the piano by ear at seven years old. Once she learned a few chords, she began writing lyrics. Fueled by a desire to express her emotions and make sense of the world around her, she hopes to connect with others through her music and make an impact similar to how some of her favorite artists have impacted her. She often draws her musical influence from two of her favorite artists — Lana Del Rey and Arctic Monkeys.
