ABC Family is kicking off a new dramatic series on Monday, August 15th, called The Lying Game. Separated at birth, identical twins Emma Becker and Sutton Mercer (both played by Alexandra Chando) have led very different lives, each oblivious to the other’s existence until circumstances bring them back together. Yearning for the family she never had, Emma agrees to help Sutton with her plan to find her birth parents, setting in motion a web of secrecy and lies.
CelebSecrets4U had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Alice Greczyn, who plays Madeline “Mads” Rybak on the show; a cool, intelligent high school student and one of Sutton’s best friends. She recently faced the departure of her beloved brother, Thayer, who moved to Los Angeles to live with their mom – leaving Mads with a disinterested father who may or may not be abusive towards her. Mads doesn’t know that Sutton’s been replaced by her twin, Emma, but she senses something is up.

CelebSecrets4U: Your new series, The Lying Game, hits televisions nationwide on August 15th. What is the series about?
Alice Greczyn: “ABC Family’s The Lying Game is about a girl who is trying to impersonate her identical twin sister that she just found out about by fooling her family, friends, and boyfriend into thinking that she is Sutton, the other girl who has gone missing. The twist is that Sutton is being impersonated by her sister, Emma. It’s a little bit confusing to be honest with you! Its very much like a “Prince and the Pauper” story, only set in the present day world.”
CelebSecrets4U: What was the audition process like for the role of Madeline “Mads” Rybeck?
Alice Greczyn: “I actually did not have to audition for the character. They made me an offer which was pretty exciting! I worked with ABC Family before; I was on their show, “Lincoln Heights,” for three seasons and also recently recurred on “Make It Or Break It.” I think because they are familiar with me and know my work, they were comfortable with making me an offer for the role of Mads, which is rare, but pretty cool. I accepted and then a week later, I was filming the pilot in Albuquerque, New Mexico! Now the series is being filmed in Austin, Texas so it is a bit crazy going all over the place! That is how it happened for me.”
Mads and Sutton and their friend Char are kind of the trio/three musketeers. They are very close. They have known each other for a very long time: growing up together and doing everything together. But as close as they are, they have their secrets. Every character has their secrets, inner pains, and family drama so everyone basically has their own story line. We all have scenes together and Sutton’s little sister, Laurel (Allie Gonino), is there as well so it becomes a group of four. We like to shop, go out to eat, and talk but we’re mostly talking about very hidden-layered superficial things that is very difficult for these girls to talk intimately with each other and talk about very close topics… everyone kinds keeps their guard up. And no one knows who to trust.”
The fanbase will probably be close to the “Pretty Little Liars” audience, which is another show based on the book series also written by Sarah Shepard. It has a lot of high school teenage drama and family drama, which would be similar to the other ABC Family story lines from different shows. It definitely has its comedic moments but as well as drama/thriller because one of the twin sisters goes missing and everyone is trying to figure out what is really going on which kind of adds a mysterious flavor to the show which I think makes it very different from a lot of other ABC Family shows.”
