Gwyn Love is giving us fun, fresh and fierce vibes with the release of her new electro-pop single “cali,” which is out now.
In “cali,” the Oklahoma native sings of “daydreaming” about moving to California and the doubt she received from her hometown friends.
In our last exclusive with Gwyn Love, she spoke about her upbringing in a small traditional Oklahoma town. But with her unique sultry and bold voice, she looked to California to break out and follow her dreams. And by the way those friends who laughed at her California dreams, are no longer in her life. Gwyn realized that she only has time for positivity and people who support her career goals.
“[‘cali’] is about me daydreaming about living in California finally and moving away from Oklahoma,” Gwyn tells Celeb Secrets. “Earlier that week I had mentioned to my friends that I planned on moving there and they thought I was kinda crazy because I had never actually been. I sat down and wrote this song later as a response of sorts.”
“I actually am no longer in contact with a lot of those friends because I didn’t feel they had my best interests at heart and truly supported me and my dreams,” she adds. “My friends I currently have support me fully and believe I can do whatever I set my mind to, as much as they don’t want me to leave, they want me to follow my dreams.”
Also today, Gwyn shared the accompanying music video for the track, which was directed by actor-turned-director Jackie Radinsky. “Working with Jackie was really chill, and I had a lot of fun on set. He had lots of cool ideas and communicated them very well which helped me see his vision and made me very hyped to film the video with him,” she shared in a statement.
It’s also a follow up to her ♡ x + EP collab with Toronto producer La+ch. The EP included tracks like “s**t i like,” “sum 1 nu”, and “vibin’.” As for what’s to come, Gwyn shares that her new collection of music is taking a unique electronic approach which will pivot her into the EDM scene.
“I plan to get more into the EDM scene as that’s where I feel I will do best,” she says, “with solo stuff, it will probably stay along the same feeling as [‘cali], but hopefully get better as time goes on.”

CS: Congrats on your new single “cali!” Can you walk us through what the song is about, along with the writing and recording process for it?
GL: “The song is about me daydreaming about living in California finally and moving away from Oklahoma. Earlier that week I had mentioned to my friends that I planned on moving there and they thought I was kinda crazy because I had never actually been. I sat down and wrote this song later as a response of sorts. I recorded this song with La+ch in Toronto and I wasn’t really sure on the production, just had a few suggestions and La+ch totally ran with it and made the vision come to life.”
CS: You shared that you wrote “cali” after you told your friends that you wanted to move to California and they laughed, said you’d be broke and end up back in Oklahoma. What do those friends think now?
GL: “I actually am no longer in contact with a lot of those friends because I didn’t feel they had my best interests at heart and truly supported me and my dreams. My friends I currently have support me fully and believe I can do whatever I set my mind to, as much as they don’t want me to leave, they want me to follow my dreams.”
CS: Coming from a small town in Oklahoma, what does it mean to you to be in California, making your dreams come true?
GL: “When I went to LA to record some music videos for my upcoming album, it truly felt like a dream. It was everything I had imagined. I met so many cool people and no one looked at me funny like I was out of place. I felt at home even though it was my first time visiting. I can’t wait to move there in January.”
CS: In “cali,” you sing “never have a bad day in Cali.” Tell us about what you are most excited for when you move there?
GL: “So I haven’t moved there yet. Actually, I plan on moving in January. I’ve visited twice this year though, for a week both times. Obviously I know bad days happen no matter where I’m living, but just the fact that I can go to the beach whenever I want and the weather is almost always perfect, makes me feel like even my bad days won’t be that bad.”
CS: Your other single “sum 1 nu” with La+ch has over 100,000 views on YouTube. Tell us about your experience working with La+ch and what that song means to you?
GL: “This song is a little bittersweet listening to it now. It is such a banger and I love how my voice sounds, the lyrics, and la+ch’s production, but I discovered later that while I was in Toronto writing that song, my ex was cheating on me. I still haven’t found “sum 1 nu”, but i really enjoy being single right now.”
CS: You give us serious hair envy, what is one hairstyle or color you really want to try but haven’t done yet?
GL: “I would totally love to see if I could rock a super short hairstyle. I also would like to go back to the neon yellow I had a couple years back, but don’t be envious of my hair because it’s soo damaged. I have to do treatments three times a week (laughs).”
CS: Is “cali” a taste of what we can expect from your music in the future? Talk to us about your upcoming music plans.
GL: “I plan to get more into the EDM scene as that’s where I feel I will do best. With solo stuff, it will probably stay along the same feeling as ‘cali,’ but hopefully get better as time goes on.”
CS: How does “cali” differ from your previous released music?
GL: “‘Cali’ is the only song that I didn’t write about from experience. I wrote this song never having been to Cali and just simply going off of what I had heard and seen on TV, which is funny to me. I always write about things I know, but I felt like I knew ‘Cali’ before having been.”
CS: A lot of artists say that they used their last year and a half at home working on their craft. Would you say that you’ve grown as an artist from the beginning of the pandemic to now? If so, in what ways?
GL: “It’s kind of sad to say, but for most of the pandemic I don’t feel that I was being as productive as I should’ve been and truly grasping the opportunity to better my craft. I had a full on breakdown. Everything just felt like too much to handle. As last year ended, I started to come out of my funk and start writing again. It was so hard to write something I liked last year, but I think that’s because I felt my music was so meaningless compared to everything going on in the world. I understand now that it can be my escape and listening to it can be other people’s escape as well.”
CS: Since we’re Celeb Secrets, do you have any behind-the-scenes secrets from making “cali” that we wouldn’t know when listening to it?
GL: “La+ch does this thing whenever he finishes a song where he turns it up really loud on the speakers and he goes to the back of the room and just listens to it all the way through. I guess just to listen to the full product, as anyone would, but I really loved this part and would full on dance and vibe out while he was standing in the back of the room just listening, probably laughing at my weird dance moves. Also, liquor was definitely involved in the making of this song (laughs).”
