Here’s Why Taylor Swift’s Interview With Stephen Colbert Means She’s Dropping ‘1989’ Next

Okay everyone, hold onto your white horses because Taylor Swift might’ve just dropped some hints that 1989 is the next album she’s re-recording.

The 31-year-old singer/songwriter made an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to discuss the release of her album, Fearless (Taylor’s Version), but more specifically the late-night host wanted to get down to business and find out who the true inspiration behind Swift’s song “Hey Stephen” was.

Colbert and Swift bickered throughout the entire conversation, with Colbert trying to confirm that Swift wrote “Hey Stephen” about him and Swift denying it, saying it’s about someone else, all the while saying extremely detailed facts about Colbert.

But that’s not what’s important here. It’s what Swift said between the lines.

At one point, Swift was denying that “Hey Stephen” was about Colbert and said, “Don’t flatter yourself. ‘Hey Stephen’ is not about you, any more than my album 1989 is about that year you spent waiting tables on the lunch shift at Scuzzi, an Italian restaurant in the river north area of Chicago, that by the way serves a really incredible slice of pizza.”

Of course, it’s just one mention about the album, she even mentioned her song from Lover, “You Need To Calm Down,” right after this.

Except it wasn’t the only nod to 1989.

“Take the feeling that you are feeling, and just ‘Shake It Off,'” Swift says as she tells Colbert that his feelings about “Hey Stephen” being about him are wrong.

If that isn’t good enough proof for you, Swift has at least started re-recording some of the 1989 tracks because earlier this month she announced that her new version of “Wildest Dreams” was featured in the trailer for the upcoming DreamWorks film Spirit Untamed.

Now, Swifties have quickly gone to work and dissected this 7-minute interview way better than we could, to figure out what other hints Swift might’ve dropped since the singer is known to share some Easter eggs for future projects every chance she gets. Check out some of the theories we found!

This Swiftie did a lot of counting and math to come up with a total of 1989 and honestly, we applaud the work.

1989 mentions New York a lot, especially since Taylor made her move to the Big Apple around the time she was writing this album and her relationship with a certain English singer (ahem, Harry Styles) blossomed in this city, which is rumored to be the big inspiration of 1989.

Guess there were a lot more hints on the collage Taylor made of Stephen that we totally missed.

This might be a reach but we thought it was clever.

Taylor even added a photo of Stephen from 1989 on the collage.

Taylor claimed that “Hey Stephen” was about author Stephen King, so it was only right for Swifties to take that and roll with it to see what they came up with…and it looks like the results were good.

And because we’d be here all day if we shared every single theory, here’s a thread of everything else we might’ve missed. Swifties are no joke.
