Josh Dela Cruz on Journey to Being the New ‘Blue’s Clues & You!’ Host – “It Was an Emotional Rollercoaster”

It’s time to pull up the Thinking Chair and follow the paw prints because Blue and her crew return to Nickelodeon for Blue’s Clues & You!, a reimagined version of the iconic children’s television show Blue’s Clues.

Just like the original, all of your beloved friends are back. From Blue, her pal Magenta, Tickety Tock, and Slippery Soap to Mr. Salt, Mrs. Pepper, Cinnamon, Paprika, Shovel and Pail, the new generation will be able to play Blue’s Clues with new host Josh Dela Cruz.

“Blue and Magenta are now 3D animated and they are furry, fluffy and so darn cute,” Dela Cruz tells Celeb Secrets. “Their comedic timing is brilliant, so anything I do is just amplified by their amazingness.”

To keep with the current times, the iconic handy dandy notebook also features a smartphone that allows Josh and Blue to not only make and receive video calls, but also skidoo to new places they find on apps.

Fans can also expect to see Steve (Steve Burns) and Joe (Donovan Patton) reprise their roles as they appear in the first episode to help Josh and the audience solve their first game of Blue’s Clues.

“It was the coolest thing ever,” Josh says of having both Steve and Donovan on set with him. “I got to watch them work together and they were having so much fun. It was amazing to see them so that I could then apply that same relaxation, ease, and fun to when I was on screen.”

He continues, “They are such big shoes to fill because this is such a huge part of our childhood that I was absolutely nervous, but Steve pulled me aside before filming to give me words of encouragement and to be myself.”

Chosen out of thousands of hopefuls, the former Broadway star says that while he feels the pressure with being the new host, he couldn’t see himself doing anything else.

“When I went into one of the auditions, I worked with the director and he gave me some notes. At the time everything was kind of draped off for lights and sound and I knew people were behind there, but I didn’t know who. Emerging from the curtain was Steve Burns — the original host — and I was ambushed and filled with even more terror. But after he opened his mouth, I was empowered, filled with confidence and like I was supposed to be there. He is just as amazing as he was in the show. It was a rollercoaster of emotions for sure and I am so happy to be apart of it.”

Nickelodeon

The original Blue’s Clues series launched in September 1996 to critical praise from educators,
parents, and preschoolers and ran for six groundbreaking seasons.  Created by Traci Paige Johnson, Todd Kessler, and Angela C. Santomero, Blue’s Clues drew acclaim and high ratings
for its unique interactivity that helped change the way kids watch television and has remained
one of the most popular preschool shows of all time.  The landmark series also raised the bar in
preschool television by exploring advanced subject matter such as sign language, geography,
physics, emotions, and anatomy.

Blue’s Clues & You! premieres today on Nickelodeon.
