Joshua Bassett Urges People to “Love Who You Love”

This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions when it comes to High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star Joshua Bassett’s sexuality. After a revelatory Q&A with Clevver News on Monday, Bassett posted more about the topic on his Instagram on Tuesday.

Speaking about Harry Styles while answering a fan’s tweet, Bassett said on Clevver News’ YouTube account, “Also he’s hot you know. He’s very charming too…this is also my coming out video I guess.”

The news made the Internet – especially TikTok where fans had already dissected the love triangle between him, Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter – go wild.

Later that afternoon, he posted a video condemning toxic masculinity with a clip of a song called “Boys Don’t Cry.” He spoke about how he was taught not to cry or show emotions when he was growing up.

“Suppressing your emotions as a child will crush your spirit and bury your heart alive,” he wrote in a note that accompanied the video. “When you cut off the sensitive part of your being/heart, your view of people [and] the world, over time, grows less and less human(e).”

With a call for allowing men to show emotions and sexuality being realized as more of a spectrum than a singular label, his words ring with his followers. That post has garnered over half a million likes.

The next day, he posted another video singing a clip of a currently untitled song that commands his life is his own to live.

“My entire life people have told me my sexuality,” he wrote in the caption. “People have shamed me for things they know nothing about. I want to say thank you to those of you who stand for love and acceptance.”

Like a lot of people, Bassett does not seem to know exactly how to label his sexuality yet but is open to love.

“Love who you love shamelessly,” he wrote. “It’s ok to still be figuring out who you are. Life’s too short to let ignorance and hatred win. I choose love.”

The end of the post is followed by a rainbow of heart emojis. We applaud Bassett for his ability to speak more on who he is and being open to whatever comes his way, and we cannot wait to celebrate him with whomever he chooses to love next.
