Lo Dishes On Her Empowering New Single “Mantra” (Exclusive)

When it comes to catchy hooks, danceable beats, and infectious choruses, Lo certainly knows what she’s doing. And with her latest single release, “Mantra,” the singer-songwriter is adding in an empowering, girl-power message for good measure! What’s not to love?

To celebrate her new single launch, Celeb Secrets caught up with the artist to hear how the fun and inspiring song “Mantra,” – officially out today! – came to be. Make sure to catch our exclusive Q & A interview below.

I love how outspoken and bold (and even at times silly) the lyrics are, and how [the song] showcases my abilities as a producer as well. My goal with each release is to be authentic and let my personality come through in the art.

Celeb Secrets: How did the song first come about?

Lo: The idea of the song actually came about during a show rehearsal. My drummer (and co-writer/production partner) Paige Blue was trying to amp me up for a showcase I was playing, and semi-jokingly said “they’ll be saying your name like a mantra!”

We both looked at each other after she said that and thought it could be a GREAT title for a confidence anthem.

Celeb Secrets: What was your writing and recording process like?

Lo: The writing process was extremely fun! I brought the concept to some writers I love in Nashville (Emily Haber, Luke Arens, Paige Blue) and the vibes were so amazing that we just had a blast and wrote the song in an afternoon. Afterwards, I added the bridge- which I actually wrote on my iPhone during a flight from New York to Nashville!

Paige and I have a production group, GIRLS, so the two of us co-produced the single, which was an incredible experience.

I love getting to use my art as a way to help move forward representation of female producers in the industry, and the collaboration was truly so amazing! The vocal take of the first verse was actually recorded with me dancing partially on the studio desk– if that gives you any idea of how much we enjoyed creating this song.

Celeb Secrets: How does this single fit into the story you’re telling with your work?

Lo: I want the Lo brand to be one where listeners can come and feel confident, free, and empowered. It’s really important to me that every single I release aligns with those values, and “Mantra” certainly does, while incorporating some more urban leaning sonic elements that shaped a large part of my dance career. I’m a dancer turned producer turned pop artist, and it’s always fun for me to figure out new ways to incorporate each part of my story and identity into my music!

I love how outspoken and bold (and even at times silly) the lyrics are, and how [the song] showcases my abilities as a producer as well. My goal with each release is to be authentic and let my personality come through in the art, and with “Mantra,” we did just that.

Celeb Secrets: What do you hope listeners will take away from or enjoy most about the song?

Lo:I hope listeners will take away an emboldened state of self-confidence from the song- after all, that’s what the initial idea of it gave me!

I hope it makes people dance and find the inner fierceness that lives within us all and can help us to face whatever that day may hold.
