To celebrate the meaningful’s song big release day, we caught up with Lo to hear how “Mosaic” came to be, what she hopes listeners take away from her lyrics, and how her impactful music video came to be. Celeb Secrets: Can you tell us about the story behind “Mosaic”?
Lo: I wrote ‘Mosaic’ when I was going through a difficult time. There were a lot of life & family things happening that were deeply impacting me and I found myself depressed for the first time in my life, to an extent I had never experienced before. One day, I was at my studio alone, and out loud said, ‘I need a new perspective!’ I didn’t understand why certain things were happening, or how to frame it all in my mind. Seconds later, the lyric and melody of the chorus of ‘Mosaic’, popped into my head! I’m not sure if it just came from a subconscious, wiser, part of me or the universe or what. But it was a super healing and magical moment in my life.
Celeb Secrets: How did that initial story inspiration become a song?
Lo: After the chorus had literally fallen out of the sky, I recorded a voice memo and took it to my friend Stephen Schmuldt! We finished writing the song with the help of Jeffrey East.
Celeb Secrets: What was the process of recording this song like?
Lo: Emotional! Whenever I sing this song, live or in the studio, I always am overcome with all sorts of feels. I recorded the final version of ‘Mosaic’ with my co-producer Paige Blue, who helped me to channel all of that emotion into the vocal. It was a magical day & my favorite vocal recording I’ve done so far. It came together really quickly and I hit notes I wasn’t even aware I could hit in the bridge!
Celeb Secrets: What do you hope listeners take away from listening to “Mosaic” on its own?
Lo: I hope listeners are able to see themselves and whatever they have gone through or are currently going through, from a larger, more hopeful perspective. I hope they can see how strong and amazing they are, and how as painful as hardship is, it can transform you into a masterpiece that is stronger, wiser, kinder, and better than you ever imagined you could be.
Celeb Secrets: What was it like creating your music video, and how did you come up with the concept?
Lo: It was another emotional day! I was so touched to have so many people I admire and love be a part of the video, and I was fighting back happy tears the whole time we were filming. I felt so proud and inspired by every one of them. I can’t remember how exactly the concept came to me, I just remember the idea for it just flooding in all at once. I knew I wanted this video to feel very real and authentic, and I’ve always loved the personal touch handwritten notes bring to film. Since singing the song in my live show, I’ve had many people reach out to me about their stories, and I knew I wanted the song to be bigger than me or my experience- which I think is how I first got the idea to involve a variety of people with a wide range of experiences in the video. From there, it all just came together!
Celeb Secrets: The stories shared in the video are incredibly moving. What was it like for you to reach out to those people and have them open up about their stories?
Lo: Aren’t they?! The whole process for it was amazing. Everyone featured in the video is a real life friend/collaborator of mine. I’m lucky to be surrounded by such incredible people in my circle. I was nervous at first that people wouldn’t want to open up and share their stories, as it even was scary for me, but I was overwhelmed by their willingness and excitement to be a part of the project.
Celeb Secrets: How do you hope viewers are impacted by the video?
Lo: I hope people feel hopeful, not alone, and inspired! No matter what it is you’re going through, as painful and hard as it is, there will be a day when you can look back on it all and see that it all served to make you stronger in ways you didn’t know were possible. As broken as you might feel, you will come out on the other side a ‘masterpiece’. And, most importantly, I hope people know that they’re never alone in that. Support is all around, and I hope they can even find a piece of that when listening to ‘Mosaic’.
