Music Monday: Meet Ryan Lafferty

Celeb Secrets: How would you describe your sound for someone who hasn’t heard you yet?

Ryan Lafferty: “It’s like if Jon Bellion and Twenty Pilots made a record except they were from southern West Virginia! (laughs)”

Celeb Secrets: We know you were previously a country artist, now merging over to pop. What made you want to make the switch?

Ryan Lafferty: “I try my best to just make music and write great songs. Where they land in the market is what I try to figure out after the creation of the song if complete. When this music was done, it just didn’t feel like something country music would accept, so I decided to let it be it’s own thing.”

Celeb Secrets: Are there any challenges/adjustments from country to pop?

Ryan Lafferty: “Plenty. Country music is a tight knit network of labels and artists who all kind of rise and fall together. Pop music to some degree is every man for themselves. So this record being more of a pop thing will have to try to carve it’s own path, which is extremely challenging.”

Celeb Secrets: Who are your biggest musical influences?

Ryan Lafferty: “John Mayer, OneRepublic, and Kendrick!”

Celeb Secrets: How did you decide to release “Here It Goes?” What about it stood out to you?

Ryan Lafferty: “I thought it was a good song to start the conversation with my fans about the changes that would happen on the next record. I think it communicated that I was going to be doing something new, but that they’d be getting a more transparent look into my life.”

Celeb Secrets: What can we expect to see from you the rest of this year?

Ryan Lafferty: “This year will be about figuring out the best way to get this new music to the world. Carving your own path is tough, so it will be about finding people in the industry to help me cut a path for this music.”

Celeb Secrets: What has been your biggest accomplishment over the past year?

Ryan Lafferty: “I think just having the courage to step outside of the safety net of my previous career. Regardless of the outcome, I’m glad I’m taking it on, it’s been really good for me to just create.”

Celeb Secrets: Do you have any funny stories from any recent live performances?

Ryan Lafferty: “I played a show at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville a few weeks ago fro Tin Pan South, and one of the guys in the round was nice enough to let me stand up and pretend I was rocking a guitar solo while he was killing it (laughs) you can find video of that on my Instagram. I’m pretty proud of my air-guitar abilities.”

Celeb Secrets: Since we are Celeb Secrets, do you have any secrets or fun facts about yourself that you would like to share with us?

Ryan Lafferty: “I sang in a talent show in Junior High with a “boy band” me and my friends started called HotStuff. It was as embarrassing as it sounds (laughs). There’s video on VHS somewhere; one day i’m sure it will turn up.”
