Olivia Rodrigo’s New Documentary Proves to Fans That She’s Exactly Where She Needs to Be in This Stage of Her Career (Review)

Olivia Rodrigo has easily become a voice for Gen-Z with her emotional evoking songs that have catapulted the singer-songwriter into a phenomenon, and fans will be able to get an inside look at how she became a household name when her new documentary, Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u, hits Disney+ tomorrow (March 25).

The 90-minute project takes the viewer on a road trip from Salt Lake City all the way to California as the 19-year-old reflects on the process of creating her record-breaking debut album, Sour. This is a trip that the singer made several times when creating her album.  Throughout the journey Rodrigo makes scenic pitstops along the way at locations like Malibu, California and Acrosanti, Arizona.

The film beautifully shoots frequent locations that Rodrigo spends time in — Malibu, California and Acrosanti, Arizona — to give the viewer a cinematic feel as she performs songs from the record. Featuring stripped-down versions and new arrangements of each track, these scenes showcase Rodrigo’s vocal and instrumental talents, proving she is exactly where she needs to be in this stage of her life.

A focal point of Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u is the creative process behind the 19-year-old’s life-changing debut single “drivers license.” At the time of the release, Rodrigo was still completing high school and had yet to turn 18. Having these big teenage milestones like completing senior year and getting your license are exciting for anyone, but for Rodrigo, these moments were only heightened because it was at that same time that “drivers license”, was becoming one of the biggest hits of the year.

Like much of the album, “drivers license” was inspired by the heartbreak that the singer faced from co-star, Joshua Bassett. Rodrigo only briefly speaks on the love-triangle that occurred, but ultimately it allowed her to create a song that was filled with so much emotion and heartbreak that so many people were able to relate to.

Rodrigo’s passion for music is widely showcased throughout the film, showing fans that she’s more than just a one-hit wonder.

When you achieve huge success as an artist, you also face an immense amount of pressure. The singer can be seen facing an inner struggle of doubt and insecurity to create something even more successful than “drivers license.” It is in these moments viewers can sympathize with the artist and the pressures that society put on young successful musicians.

In addition, Olivia Rodrigo: driving home 2 u will give fans an inside look into the making of each song off her album. With the help of her producer, Dan Nigro, Rodrigo was able to navigate what sounds good and feels good for the listener. Viewers will see footage of the singer in the studio debating vocals and coming up with various lyrics. Nigro even helped to inspire some of the iconic sounds that fans know and love from the album like in the song “Brutal,” which fans will see is one of Rodrigo’s favorites.

Rodrigo’s heartbreak only proved to be more relatable to fans after she created hit songs with emotional lyrics. Rodrigo’s songwriting abilities, which we see in the film, are so vivid and descriptive that listeners can feel the heartbreak and anger through the music. The now Grammy-nominated singer has showcased that she is not just a one-off success but is someone that is here to stay and change the industry.
