PostScript‘s debut single “#PictureDay” is already making a big impact — and that’s because its compelling music video is striking a chord with viewers around the world by tackling the topics of gender identity and expression. Only a week after the video (by filmmaker Charlie Anderson) was posted to Facebook, it has accrued over 1 million views and hundreds of shares.
The powerful music video follows a high school student (played by Jordon Bolden) who is picking out an outfit on the day before school picture day. If you have ever stressed over taking your class portraits, you know it’s because the goal is to try to look your absolute best for the occasion, but nine times out of ten, you end up looking tragic — and it’s not even your fault! It’s the awkward angles, the bizarre studio backdrops, and the uncomfortable formalwear your grandma may have bought you for the occasion. Still, that moment is immortalized in your school yearbook. If you or anyone you know has ever struggled with gender identity, you also know there’s an added layer of stress over deciding whether to conform to your school’s expectations or present yourself as you identify.

We see our star “perform” the personas that go along with every outfit they try on, from a slick and “chill” sunglasses dude to a muscle-showcasing sports bro in a varsity jacket. When outfit after outfit doesn’t feel quite right, something has to change — and that’s when the lip gloss, floral jeans, and off-the-shoulder blouses come into action. Eventually, the perfect outfit presents itself just in time for the flashbulbs to go off on picture day.
(By the way, the montage of all the students taking their school pictures in this video are killing it more than I could have ever dreamed of in front of the photographers. Slay!)
