Q&A: Trophy Boy – aka Alex Bar – Shares “T.O.F.U.” and Teases Upcoming EP

Alex Bar is back with new music under a new name!

The actor, who you may recognize from shows like Dave on FX, HBO’s Westworld, AppleTV+’s Mosquito World — announced his artist persona Trophy Boy along with a new song “T.O.F.U.”

“Adopting ‘Trophy Boy’ as my stage name was easier than I thought it would be,” Bar tells Celeb Secrets exclusively. “When I would be in music sessions, everyone would refer to me as ‘Trophy Boy.’ Then with my acting career taking off, I thought it would be so cool if people discovered me in different ways.”

“I can fully lean into that side of me I feel I am when I’m Trophy Boy,” he adds. “He’s a huge part of me and it allows me to bring out a side of me I don’t get to very often.”

Carefully crafted and executed with impeccable pop-sensibility with a hint of R&B, “T.O.F.U.” — which is an acronym that stands for “this one’s for you” — is an easy-to-listen to single that will be on repeat immediately.

“T.O.F.U” is the artists’ final single before releasing his upcoming EP titled All I Hear Is You Screaming My Name. We caught up with Trophy Boy to hear all about “T.O.F.U.”, his EP, and what he has planned next.

Celeb Secrets: Thanks for chatting with us!  We last covered you in March 2020 when you released “Can’t Do It Right.” Can you tell us what you’ve been working on since then, and why is now the right time for you to come back with new music?

Trophy Bar: “Since my last release, I’ve been writing and creating a lot of new music. Readying a couple EP’s to drop one after the other. Really finding my groove with music. Also acting is a huge passion of mine as well. I’ve been in two shows since then, the ‘Mosquito Coast’ on Apple TV+ which I shot in Mexico and ‘Dave’ on FX with Little Dicky. Both out now!”

CS: You are also fully adopting the “Trophy Boy” persona with this release. What made you change your artist name to Trophy Boy and what does it mean to you?

TB: “Adopting Trophy Boy as my stage name was easier than I thought it would be. When I would be in music sessions, everyone would refer to me as Trophy Boy. I would even refer to myself in third person. I would call a song a ‘Trophy Boy’ song never an ‘Alex Bar’ song. Then with my acting career taking off, I thought it would be so cool if people discovered me in different ways. Someone would see me on tv and say, ‘wait I think that’s Trophy Boy!’ And if they were discovering my music they’d say “wait that’s Alex Bar” but letting them be able to differentiate it in their mind.

To me it means I can fully lean into that side of me I feel I am when I’m Trophy Boy. He’s a huge part of me and it allows me to bring out a side of me I don’t get to very often.”

CS: “T.O.F.U.” definitely feels like it draws on R&B influences. Who are some artists that you listen to that inspire you?

TB: “Huge music influences for me are Miguel, Kehlani, Brandy, Chris Brown, NAO just to name a few. I really respond to a rich harmony and meaningful lyrics and I really feel like they all do that.”

CS: What do you hope listeners take away from “T.O.F.U.?”

TB: “I hope they want to listen to it over and over. My other music that’s released are very intense dance music and you might not play it on repeat but I feel like T.O.F.U. You can just have on and grove to it for hours.”

CS: How does “T.O.F.U” tie in the rest of your releases and the upcoming EP? What can fans expect from it?

TB: “‘T.O.F.U.’ is the chill sibling in the family on the EP. I wanted to break up the EP since it’s mostly upbeat dance music. Have a groove on the EP that maybe you want a chill vibe you could start your day with ‘T.O.F.U.’ and then move to ‘Weapon’ when you have your coffee in you.

The EP is full of energy! There’s R&B, pop, and even a rap track. From beginning to end, you’ll feel like your in 2001 with a 2021 production value.”

CS: Lastly, we are Celeb Secrets. Can you share a secret talent with us?

TB: “A secret talent of mine is I used to show my photography in galleries. Growing up I got behind a camera and shot landscape photography. By the age of 14, I started showing in galleries. It was fun to create art that was so intimate. Only I was involved in the process or creating it.”
