Shiloh Nelson Reveals What She’s Learned from Starring Alongside Sofia Carson in Netflix’s “Feel The Beat”

The moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here… Feel the Beat is headed to Netflix this weekend and its definitely a must-watch!

According to the streaming platform, Feel the Beat follows April (played by Sofia Carson), a talented, self-centered dancer who fails to find success on Broadway. She grudgingly moves back in with her dad (Enrico Colantoni) in her small Wisconsin hometown, trying her best to avoid everyone in her tight-knit community, including her first love Nick (Wolfgang Novogratz). April is then reluctantly recruited by her former dance teacher (Donna Lynn Champlin) to coach the town’s misfit group of young dancers. Initially believing she’s found the path back to Broadway, April gains so much more. A Love letter to small towns, Feel the Beat is a heartwarming comedy about chasing your dreams.

Celeb Secrets (virtually) sits down with actress Shiloh Nelson to talk about her time on set, how she got into character for her role and some BTS secrets from set that you wouldn’t know while watching. FYI, Nelson plays Ruby, a shy, hardworking girl who becomes the stage manager.

“Ruby isn’t very good at dancing AT ALL, which I really relate to, however, I’m a lot more confident than Ruby,” she tells Celeb Secrets. “She rolls with the punches more, which I respect in her. She tries so hard to be good at whatever she’s doing, even though she doesn’t always succeed, which I also see a lot of myself in.”

She also talked to us about working with Sofia and the one piece of advice she was given that’s sticking with her throughout her career.

“[Sofia] taught me so much and we had so much fun on set,” Nelson says. “There was one scene where we separated by the camera and we broke out singing her song ‘Space Between’ that she sings with Dove Cameron in the Descendants 2 film, which was SO amazing. It’s such a fond memory for me as I loved that song from the film beforehand. She also taught me to support my fellow actors and if I’m doing lines off-camera for them, go ahead and still cry in the scene to really help them.”

You can keep up with Shiloh by following her on TikTok here and on Instagram at @shilohanelson. Shiloh is currently on our Instagram Stories taking over for the entire day — don’t forget to tune in!

Celeb Secrets: Can you talk to us about “Feel The Beat” and your character Ruby?

Shiloh Nelson: “Yes! It’s a really fun dance movie and I got to act with Sofia Carson in it. Her character is a Broadway dancer that coaches a squad of misfit girls for a big competition. I’m one of the girls but my character Ruby isn’t very good at dancing AT ALL, which I really relate to.”

CS: Are you anything like Ruby? We know that you had to go through a month of dance training as well. What was that process like?

SN: “I’m a lot more confident than Ruby but she rolls with the punches more, which I respect in her. She tries so hard to be good at whatever she’s doing, even though she doesn’t always succeed, which I also see a lot of myself in. Yes, we trained for a whole month before filming! I was the only girl without dance experience going into it so that was also intimidating for me. The first ASL I learned from my co-star Shaylee was the signs for ‘hot’ and ‘tired.’ By the end of the training, I was too good at dancing for my character and the producer had Mia Michaels choreograph mistakes back in for me which made me so happy. It’s the first time I’ve ever had to physically do something like that, and it was the most amazing experience.”

CS: What was your favorite dance number in the film to work on?

SN: “Probably one of the bad dances at the beginning! We’re not very good before Sofia’s character April teaches us so the first two dances are hilarious to watch.”

Netflix

CS: The film does star Sofia Carson — what was it like working with her and the rest of the cast? Do you have any favorite memories from filming, whether it be on or off set?

SN: “I was a big fan of Sofia’s before filming as I had watched her in all of the Descendants films and her Cinderella Story movie. She was everything I had hoped for and more. She taught me so much and we had so much fun on set. There was one scene where we separated by the camera and we broke out singing her song ‘Space Between’ that she sings with Dove Cameron in the Descendants 2 film, which was SO amazing. It’s such a fond memory for me as I loved that song from the film beforehand. She also taught me to support my fellow actor and if I’m doing lines off-camera for them, go ahead and still cry in the scene to really help them.”

CS: What’s one thing you’re really looking forward for fans to see when “Feel The Beat” premieres?

SN: “The dancing! I hope everyone hops off the couch and dances.”

CS: Since we are Celeb Secrets, can you share secrets from the movie that you would want fans to know?

SN: “There was so much dancing on and off camera while filming this movie! Wolfgang taught me the ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’ dance, which is adorably dorky, and Sofia taught me to salsa. So even when we weren’t dancing on camera, in between takes we’d do the ‘Chicken Noodle Soup’ dance then we’d Salsa. It was such a blast.”
