Taylor v. Serrano: First Female Boxing Match to Headline at MSG Saturday

For the first time in history, an all-female boxing match will headline at Madison Square Garden.

The epic match between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano is set to square up this Saturday night at the “World’s Most Famous Arena,” as it’s dubbed, in New York City. Plenty of hype, understandably, surrounds the big event.

“’Trust me when I say the amount of media that is coming to Madison Square Garden, I’ve never seen anything like it,” the chief of Matchroom Boxing said regarding the fight. “This fight, when it comes around on Saturday, will be absolutely massive. I think people have embraced this fight. People are excited for this moment. People have bought into this moment.”

Serrano comes into the match as a slight favorite over Taylor, the undisputed champion. Holding 42 career victories, Serrano, a nine-time world champion, has teamed up with notable boxers including Jake Paul in the past. And now, this Saturday night, she has a chance to steal the championship from Taylor if she manages a victory – but it won’t be easy.

“First and foremost, I hope it just puts [women’s boxers] on a different pedestal of respect and gets them paid better,” Paul said after promoting Serrano. “That right there will just prove to the rest of the world that women need to be paid more in this sport. Because they are the most underpaid, more than anybody. That’s what I’m looking to do.”

Meanwhile, Katie Taylor comes into the match as a slight underdog, but that should not be a message of discouragement. The Irish warrior is a two-weight world champion and the current undisputed lightweight champion, so she shan’t be taken lightly and won’t go down without a fight (literally).

“For us, we make decisions based on economic interests and the growth of our business and the health of our partners’ businesses,” Joe Markowski, vice-president of the prominent boxing streaming service DAZN, said. “Katie Taylor drives our business forward in a really positive way. We want to continue working with her because it is good business for her and good business for us.”
