The Chainsmokers Bring “World War Joy” to Super Bowl LIV with Wild Show in Miami

The city of Miami was on a whole other level this weekend for Super Bowl LIV and The Chainsmokers were a major reason why.

The Grammy Award-winning EDM duo headlined day one of SiriusXM and Pandora’s Super Bowl Week Opening Drive Super Concert Series on Wednesday (January 29) in Miami Beach, FL, bringing their massive show to a somewhat intimate venue — a 2,700 cap Fillmore Miami Beach theater.

Bringing their signature energy from the second the lights dimmed, the guys, along with drummer Matt McGuire, welcomed the audience to “World War Joy” with a mashup of some of their biggest hits before yelling out, “Miami y’all ready?!”

The audience was indeed ready for what The Chainsmokers were about to for the next 90 minutes, as they were really feeling the music, while red strobe lights rocked retinas as the air filled with smoke and glitched synth chaos during performances of their songs “Takeaway” and “Roses,” before transitioning into epic remixes of original songs like “Paris” and “Push My Luck,” and covers including Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under The Bridge” and Federico Franchi’s “Cream,” better known to the Miami audience at Pitbull and Lil Jon’s “Krazy.” They also mixed the Isley Brother’s “Shout” into a jock jam explosion of Yo Majesty’s “Club Action” and 2 Unlimited’s “Get Ready For This.”

One of the best moments of the night came from drummer Matt McGuire, who has an epic drum solo that was so lit, his drum sticks went on fire. The drum solo was followed by a slew of original hits from the guys, including “Call You Mine” with Bebe Rexha; “Don’t Let Me Down” with Daya; “Who Do You Love” with 5 Seconds of Summer; “Hope” with Winona Oak; and “Something Just Like This” with Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

Though there was no encore, the guys ended their set with Taggart was doing his best Freddie Mercury impression, leading the crowd in a series of “ayos” before tricking them into lines of their 52-week No. 1 hit “Closer.” With phones in hand, everyone in the audience was filming the iconic moment while singing along to the pop/EDM anthem.
