Pop singer, Sabrina Carpenter, dropped her new single, “Skin” and the Internet is going crazy over it.
The singer/songwriter surprised her fans Thursday morning (January 21) on Instagram announcing the release of the track.
The song seems to address High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star Olivia Rodrigo’s song, drivers license, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. In the song, Carpenter says: “There’s no gravity in the words we write/Maybe you didn’t mean it/Maybe “blonde” was the only rhyme.”
This could possibly reference Rodrigo’s lyrics: “And you’re probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt, she’s so much older than me, she’s everything I’m insecure about.”
The chorus of “Skin” appears to indirectly attack Rodrigo as she asserts her confidence singing: “I wish you knew that even you can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in.”
Fans are speculating if Carpenter even listened to Rodrigo’s song and are a bit confused, wondering why she’s going after the 17-year-old singer.
Since the release of “drivers license,” fans have been speculating if the track was about Rodrigo’s HSMTMTS co-star and rumored ex-boyfriend, Joshua Bassett. Bassett and Rodrigo were rumored to be dating early last year then called it quits in July 2020, which was around the time Rodrigo posted a preview of “driver’s license” on Instagram mentioning a “brunette girl,” but in its official release, the lyric changed to “blonde girl.”
A few months after the split, Bassett was publicly seen with Carpenter on numerous occasions as well as a TikTok Carpenter uploaded in October. Carpenter was also rumored to be in Bassett’s music video “Anyone Else,” a song which was rumored to be about Rodrigo.
